Science Can't Explain Away God. Religion Can't Explain Away Science.
Science Can't Explain Away God. Religion Can't Explain Away Science.
Science is here to explain the way things consistently work. Or if they work inconsistently, why and when they will not work the way we previously thought. We take a hypothesis based on observation. Come up with a way to test it. Check to see if it worked the way we thought. When our previous hypothesis fails to explain what we observe, we update the hypothesis and figure out a new experiment to refine our way of thinking. It merely is a system that helps explain our observations of the present and the past and helps us make more accurate predictions for the future. And as it turns out, if we record our observations and move systematically, we can use our knowledge to do a wide range of things. Everything from grow more corn, to make gas emit light, and more. This may be human kind's best advantage. Because, as it turns out, our skin is not that thick, our "claws" are not that sharp, and we don't run, swim or climb that fast...and we can't even fly. Science means "know".
Philosophy comes into play when we cannot devise a way to test. So we imagine all the possibilities and come up with theories. We use logic and imagination and debate what might make the most sense. It is the "study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence". If science asks, "How?" Philosophy asks, "Why?" Much of what used to be philosophy has now been swallowed up by the steady drumbeat of science. Philosophy used to ask what the universe is made of. The answer was, "4 elements: water, fire, earth and wind". Science now recognizes (since 2015) 118 "elements" and many subatomic particles. Philosophy could, I suppose ponder what the subatomic particles are made of, but scientists generally become philosophers at the edges of their fields of study. It takes some imagination and debate to figure out what the next experiment should be. Just look into string theory and you'll see what I mean. Philosophy these days tends to study the existential questions like what is reality...although science is working on that one too and religion explains things outside of the physical space. Philosophy means "love of wisdom".
Religion means "to bind". As in making a bond, keeping an obligation or vow. Essentially it is a promise. A promise to follow a superhuman power or God.
Science cannot explain away God. Science studies laws of nature. The physical world as it is. God is a power or force acting outside of, within or above nature as we see it. Perhaps one day science will be able to study the forces at play that are wielded completely and perfectly by God. But for now, religion hinges on faith. And faith is a thing for which science has no known way to measure or test. God is not observable or testable with the tools of science. God is not reachable through the methodology of science.
Religion cannot explain away science. The purpose of religion is to bind yourself to a supernatural power through following precepts taught within a given religion. The whole idea itself is supernatural. As science is the study of the nature of things that are and how and what they are and do. Religion cannot explain away science. It is in a different realm. We are physical beings. If religion explained away science, it would explain away us. Religion seeks a spiritual or supernatural connection which is not measurable with physical instruments.
So, engage in science to gain knowledge of physical things as they are and predict how they will behave. Use Philosophy to imagine and debate about why things are the way they are. Embrace religion to bind yourself to a power or being that is not bound by the physical laws as we know them.
So, do you have any evidence gained through the scientific method that I am right or wrong? Would you like to add your thoughts or debate about how I am right or wrong? Would you like to share your ideas on connecting with the supernatural? Please do so below!
